‘What if you saw the world’s most honest mirror?’ Tanha asks you. With almost an EDMish soundscape to it, Tanha may fool you into believing that it is a club anthem. That is why I call it a ‘Grand Celebration of Loneliness.’ When I saw a YouTube concert of Green Day performing ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams,’ I realized how a huge crowd full of all age groups sang in unison a song about loneliness. That was poetic. Similarly with Tanha, I wanted to almost satirize the concept of loneliness. Covering themes like suicidal thoughts, recurring images, and the burden of internal thoughts that may not even belong to you, Tanha manages to tell us how loneliness makes you observe more yet understand less at the same time. This is a perfect introduction to the deceptive world of ‘Sheeshmehel’ where all you see are images you don’t want to. The sound design of this track includes samples from some of my favorite 60s Hindi music, an electric guitar that almost sounds like sitar, retro analog synths, modern digital synth basses, experimental Indian and African percussion, and psychedelic yet Bollywoodish vocals.
